So, what is a ‘Therapeutic Relationship’ (TR) when it comes to being a counsellor or therapist?

This week’s lecture, along with part of last week’s, looked at the importance of the TR in therapy. For anyone who would like to know what it means, basically, it is the professional bond between a counsellor and a client, built on trust, respect, and understanding. It provides a safe and supportive environment for the client to explore their thoughts, feelings, and behaviours.

The TR is crucial because, for therapy to be effective, there must be trust so the client will open up, enabling them to truly express their thoughts and feelings. It won’t work otherwise.
