I have my first reading week at the end of October. While some of my fellow students will undoubtedly use this time for anything but reading or studying, I’ve decided to fully commit to my course and give it 100%. Knowing I have a buffer week before each assignment eases the pressure and helps me manage any unforeseen issues. Asking for extensions, also known as ECs, feels like an acceptance of poor time management, and I want to avoid that.
One thing I’ve discovered is that I’m not a natural reader. Instruction manuals and documentation? No problem. But when it comes to long passages of text and research papers, it feels like the information goes in one ear and out the other. It’s not that I dislike reading; I find it hard to concentrate and retain what I’ve read. Even making notes doesn’t seem to help much.
I can only assume this is another skill I must practice and perfect. I’ve started experimenting with different techniques to improve my reading and retention. For instance, I’ve tried breaking down the text into smaller sections, taking regular breaks, and discussing what I’ve read with classmates. Sometimes, explaining the material to someone else helps reinforce my understanding.
Despite the challenges, I’m determined to make the most of this reading week. It’s an opportunity to build better study habits and develop a more effective approach to reading. I’m hopeful that with time and effort, I’ll become more comfortable and confident with the material.
